Reputable Plumbing Companies
There are several things to bear in mind before engaging a company to fix your drains, and one of the most important things to consider is whether they are reputable and reliable.
The Plumbing Industry Board issues licenses to professional drain companies. This license number must be included on any advertising where the operator claims they are a licensed plumber or licensed drainer. You should ask to see the trades persons registration card, or if they are a member of the Master Plumbers and Mechanical Services Association of Australia, their Association membership card.
The best test for the reliability and reputation of any contractor is when they come recommended. Reliable drain companies will provide you with a quote before any work starts. It is also good business sense to get any quote in writing. Do not forget that if the job is over the value of $500 or there is an alteration to the drain, you must get a certificate of compliance from the licensed repairperson.
Obtaining Quotes
Always ask a plumbing contractor for a quote, and preferably in writing. This will provide you with the information on what work needs to be done, how much it will cost and who is qualified to make the repairs.
Some contractors offer a flat rate over the phone. Others will want to look at the problem before giving an estimate. Normally, it is difficult to give exact quotes, because a simple job may turn out to be a larger problem. Basic things like replacing taps or water closets have set fees. Always make sure the plumbing contractor you choose is licensed. It is also a good idea to compare quotes from a number of contractors. Find out when they plan to do the job and how many people will be involved.
Drain and Sewer Cleaning
Drains and sewers need to be regularly cleaned and flushed out to prevent build-up of materials that can lead to a blockage. However, should a blockage occur, plumbers can employ a variety of methods and tools to fix an obstruction.
One of the most common methods of unblocking drains is the use of rodding machines. A flexible tube is pushed through the drain via an electrical motor that rotates the tube clearing through the passage. Other types of clearing systems use hydro blasting, where water is pumped under high pressure down the drains, and closed circuit television pipeline inspections.
Before engaging a plumber to do any work on your drains, ask for a quote. The plumber should outline the work to be done and how much it will cost. If there is additional work to be done, make sure the plumber lets you know in advance.
Septic Tank and Drain Field Maintenance
Most metropolitan areas have municipal sewage disposal systems, but in rural and semi-rural areas, homeowners must install their own septic tank sanitation system.
During the life of the septic tank, which may be 20 to 30 years or more, the system usually works efficiently. The drain field, or ground filtering system, is invisible, except for an inspection and clean-out hatch. The drain field only requires maintenance when the soils immediately around the pipes becomes saturated, clogged, and the soil loses its ability to function as a filter. As a result, effluent will appear on the ground surface, causing a distinctive and unpleasant odor. When a drain field has reached the end of its usual life, it is possible to restore it to an effective filter again. This can be done by removing the old gravel and the clogged earth immediately adjacent, treating the nearby remaining soil and replacing the gravel field, covering it with a layer of fresh soil.
