Dealing With Glass Merchants or Glaziers

What Types of Glass Can They Replace?

Glass is a very versatile material, depending on the type of situation it is to be used. For example, there are two main types of Safety Glass - laminated and toughened, which must conform to government or industry specifications. Laminated glass is designed to resist shattering. A clear vinyl inter-layer is bonded between two pieces of glass so when broken, the glass stays together for safety. You can also purchase toughened glass - a good idea for areas where there is a risk of breakage. This type of glass can be used in shower screens and patio doors and, if broken, the glass breaks in to small pieces.

Ordinary clear annealed window glass is most commonly used in home construction. Builders are now using double-glazed windows, which have two pieces of glass, separated by sealed air space. Double-glazed windows have a greater insulation value. If they're constructed of Low-E glass, they can be even more insulated to keep out the summer heat and winter cold. Tinted glass is also available to cut down on glare and heat from the sun.

Do They Follow Any Safety Standards?

Glass is an extremely versatile building material. When selecting glass or glazing services, ask about the many products and how they can be used. For example, glass can increase natural light, provide climate control and UV protection, reduce noise, and create the illusion of extra space.

The law requires the use of safety glass (either laminated or toughened glass) in shower screens, most glass panels in or adjacent to doors, and anywhere glass has the potential for human impact.

In situations where glazing was done previously and safety glass was not used, the law requires safety glass be used in the case of breakage replacement. Because broken glass can be dangerous and reduce security and comfort, prompt service is vital.

When choosing a glass replacement service, ask if after hours services are available. Ask for a quote stipulating the type of glass to be installed, and ensure it meets the required standard by asking for an accredited glazier. Glaziers should leave the area clean and tidy and remove all broken glass.

Available Installation Options

Most glass dealers install windows, or can arrange for installation. If you plan to do the work yourself, a glass merchant can give you helpful advice. Double-glazed windows may come as a whole unit. If one plate of glass is broken, normally the whole window section or unit has to be replaced. If your home has single-pane glass, the replacement is normally a simpler operation. Most auto glass, especially replacement windscreens and rear window glass, must be professionally installed with proper sealing. If you decide to fix a broken side window on your car, check first to find out if your insurance allows for non-professional installation.

Comfort Items You Should Consider

Using the proper glass can improve comfort at home or in your vehicle. Tinted glass cuts down on glare and heat from the sun, and can protect upholstery and furnishings.

If you are considering building or buying a home, consider tinted glass or double-glazing for your windows. These windows can reduce the amount of heat coming into your house in the summer, and help to keep the cold out in winter. They can include Low-E glass, which can be injected with an inert gas such as argon for even better energy efficiency. Remember to maintain weather stripping around the windows, too.

Finally, for convenience you can install windows with tilt-in sashes for easier access to let you clean interior and exterior glass from the inside of your home.
